A member asked:

If a 24h-ph-metry result is normal, is this a sure sign that there is no reflux? or is it possible that you have it one day, and the other day not?thx

Acidity and Symptoms: Acid reflux is a common condition. The nature of symptoms and relief of symptoms with antacids is more reliable to make a diagnosis. If your PCP is not certain of diagnosis, go see a gastroenterologist. The pH test is an old fashioned test which is not entirely reliable. Try a 2 week course of treatment with either Pepcid (famotidine) or Prilosec to see if symptoms are fully relieved.

Explanation : This is pretty reliable test for diagnosis of reflux. The condition could one day better and another worse depending upon the quality of food consumed. But test is standard.

Esophag ph Monitor: When performed correctly, the test has >98% Sens and spec. Pre-test prep is important. You should not have taken certain stomach acid blockers for a week before the test. That having been said, the key number Is the time if any pH was recorded at <4. If 0, and the test allowed for supine and upright times, then it is pretty certain that the result was a true negative.
