Benign growths: Neurofibromas are benign growths that arise off of normal perphipheral nerves. These can be seen visually on the skin. These are a prominent part of neurofibromatosis type i or ii, genetic conditions where there are numerous neurofibromas.

Inherited disorder: Most cases of neurofibromatosis are inherited. It is characterized by skin manifestions of a light coffee color. Tumors occur on the nerve sheaths which may protrude under the skins and at the nail beds. In some caes tumors of the brain may occur. In rare cases the fibrous tumors can be disfiguring as is depicted in "the elephant man". There are peripheral and central nervous system forms.
