What is plexiform neurofibroma?

Nerve sheath tumor: Neurofibromas are nerve sheath tumors. Often seen in neurofibromatosis which is a genetic disase. There are two types dermal and plexiform plexiform versions are associated with multiple nerve bundles. These tumors can cause disfigurement and pain. Dermal type never are always bengin. The plexiform can become malignant. Patients need close medical followup.

Large neurofibroma: Plexiform neurofibromas are large extensive tumors that grow from nerves anywhere in the body. Unlike cutaneous neurofibromas, plexiform neurofibromas are often found in young children, sometimes even present around the time of birth. Rarely they can become malignant.Plexiform neurofibromas may be located around the eye socket, face, arm, leg, back, chest, or abdomen.
