Occiput: The prominent part of the skull (where you feel it curve in toward the neck) is called the occiput. Occipital lymph nodes are 1/2 to 1 inch oval or ball shaped glands situated next to the muscles between the neck and the head. Infection nearby may cause these nodes to increase in size and become tender. Another term that sounds like this is occipital lobe: a posterior portion of the brain.
