I'm not exactly sure: what you mean by "smelled like sex" but perhaps you believe you recognize a characteristic odor of semen mixed with vaginal secretions. While you think this odor only comes from the presence of both types of secretions, the composition of vaginal secretions alone can vary and cause variations in odor. You can't identify who contributed the odor by smelling it. This is not an issue to worry about.
