Is a plaster of paris necessary for a knee sprain? i had a soccer injury, a knee sprain and i the dr strapped my knee with pop

Not for a sprain: Usually for sprains a splint will do. If your knee is unstable, or if there is a fracture, then POP is used in some countries. Perhaps your Dr wants to immobilize your knee for a short time, or perhaps there is concern for a fracture. I wouldn't want to second guess your Dr as to why he/she used POP. Some knee sprains are more serious than others. Hope your knee heals well!

Plaster paris cast: A sprain, fracture , tear? Non orthopedist will splint( ( i.e. not all the way around), if concerned about a fracture or unstable joint. Or can use pre-fab splints and crutches. Nowadays only orthopedists cast . Fractures are detected by xray. Ligament tears, meniscus tears by MRI . Except for fracture ( and even w/ small fx) immobilize with brace ,ace and give crutches. discuss w ortho
