Aspiration: Usually recommendations are based on a bedside swallow evaluation in which the patient is challenged with food and liquids with different consistencies. The recommendation for thickened liquids, nectar or honey thick are made according to the test performed by a speech and swallow specialist and reflect an impaired swallow reflex for regular liquids.
