Does it still hurt?: Chances are, if he's still in extreme pain then it hasn't actually gone back in, and an incarcerated hernia, the presence of which this story suggests, is really a surgical emergency. So if he's still in extreme pain, then you really need to scoop him up and get him to the emergency room right away.

Stubborn guy?: If he changes his mind, just be quietly supportive - don't rub it in. It's probably not dangerous and if it stays in and heals up - all is fine. It's a sort of hernia and most often treated by binding - a drag in a hot summer. If it is bad, he'll go for an exam and if needed, they can do a bit of surgery to fix it. Nice that you care!

He is in real danger: Your dad has a hernia, and if there is or was extreme pain a part of his intestine with its blood supply was being pinched off. This could easily happen again and he is in danger of the intestine being lost through lack of blood supply. He should be seen, and quickly, to prevent a catastrophe.
