Yes: That can happen, and the expected period won't come. However, in order for that to happen, one would have to ovulate later than expected, because one's egg only survives a day or so. That means although one usually ovulates about 14 days before her expected period, she would have to ovulate later, at about 10 days before her expected period, in order to get her egg fertilized.
