Good guess: That is bleeding from a torn tissue. Many causes, like a severe landing on the footer or striking an obstacle-a sharp edge of some sort. Blood sings, swells, turns blue then yellow and fades as the swelling diminishes. Warm soaks help a little. Other minor causes in older people.
