Exam: The first step is an examination to determine if a cause is found. Endometrial polyps, infections, fibroids and hormonal changes can cause irregular spotting. Birth control is one way to treat irregular bleeding. Progesterone is another. If an infection is found it should be treated. If a polyp is found it can be removed.
