Diarrhea: Severe diarrhea may be due to a viral intestinal infection but should show gradual improvement over several days without any specific treatment. If diarrhea remains severe and unrelenting, stool culture is indicated to check for pathogenic bacteria or parasites which do require specific treatment. I recommend an evaluation in the hospital emergency room in view of your symptoms with flank pain.
