Sore throat: A sore throat is often due to a viral infection which lasts a few days and often a head cold then follows. If a sore throat shows steady worsening, a throat culture is recommended to check for a strep infection which would require antibiotic therapy. A very prolonged sore throat may be due to infectious mononucleosis, and in older adults malignancy must be checked for.
