Bacterial vaginosis?: The main cause of strong vaginal odor, often with discharge, is bacterial vaginosis, an overgrowth of mostly normal bacteria. Often it smells "fishy" and often is especially strong after unprotected sex. BV isn't an STD, but the STD trichomonas causes the same symptoms, and other STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia) are more common in women with BV. Treatment with metronidazole usually is effective.
