UTI yes, kidney no: Nitrofurantoin is usually effective against lower urinary tract (bladder) infection, but not for actual kidney infection (pyelonephritis). The best antibiotic often should be based on a urine culture with testing to determine which antibiotics are most active against the particular bacteria causing it. Discuss with your doctor.
