Depends on tests: The lumbar puncture kit itself costs about $50-100 retail (varies depending on the hospital / facility). But that is not the expensive part. After doing the lumbar puncture, fluid is commonly sent for different tests to help diagnose what is going on. The cost of the procedure depends on the type & number of tests. Some fancy tests - PCR for herpes virus, as an example, can run hundreds of dollars
