Kidney stones: can cause severe pain, bleeding, and in some cases infection and eventual kidney damage. You should see your doctor. In the meantime, keep well hydrated.

Two reasons.: (1)) Large stones (>5mm) which will likely not pass and for which you would need some assistance quickly. (2) Recurrent stones, as you may have a metabolic derangement causing them that must be characterized and addressed. (3) Pain, regardless of the size of the stone, could indicate trouble.
