What is rheumatic mitral valve obstruction?

MitralValve stenosis: There are 4 valves in the heart. The mitral valve is between the left atrium and left ventricle, and is the valve most often damaged by rheumatic heart disease (rheumatic fever after strep infections). Damage to the mitral valve causes its 2 flaps to thicken, stiffen, come closer together, and/or get attached to one another, leaving a smaller opening in the center of the valve, thus blocking flow.
