A member asked:

My son has nephrotic syndrome and is currently relapsing he has tested positive for nitrates this morning do i need to take him to the hospital ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

See below: Nitrites normally are not found in urine but result when bacteria are present that reduce urinary nitrates to nitrites. False positive readings can occur. If significant amounts of leukocytes are also present, would support the presence of a UTI. Most important is whether your son is having symptoms of a UTI: fever, chills, burning, urgency, frequency in which case, contacting your MD more urgent.
