Gastroenteritis: Symptoms suggest gastroenteritis, often viral. Norovirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the U.S. It can be spread from an infected person thru contaminated food, water, surfaces and airborne droplets. It causes watery diarrhea and in some cases vomiting. Food poisoning from a meal eaten several hours earlier is unlikely as that would usually cause severe vomiting.
