Possible but...: The most common illness in India that is uncommon in Canada is malaria, but it's only common in the region just south of Calcutta and is not contagious. People anywhere can have intestinal parasites but they are more common in India. With proper hygiene they are not readily transmitted but Dr. can test relatives for parasites and get them treated after they arrive. But generally no need to worry!
