A member asked:

I have a ovarian cyst filled with blood and am very scared. how serious are they?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Usually not serious: It's very common to form ovarian cysts. Sometimes the fluid inside is clear (simple cyst) or the cyst is filled with blood (hemorrhagic cyst). For the most part, they are not dangerous at all. They resolve over time usually. If a hemorrhagic cyst is very big (5cm or more) it can cause discomfort/pain or lead to other bad outcomes (ovarian torsion) which is rare. Cysts rarely require surgery.
