Temporary injury: Sunburn is basically when the radiation from the sun injures the tissues. Your body responds with inflammation (red, hot, swollen, tender) which means it is bringing fresh blood and healing factors to the area. Unless your sunburn is so severe that you have blistering, evidence of deeper tissue injury or you self traumatize by picking off dead skin, the color should return to normal quickly.
