Acute sinusitis?: Your symptoms sound consistent with acute sinusitis. The problem is that the majority of cases of acute sinusitis are bacterial. Some are viral, so if you want to forgo the odds you can ride this out for a while - viral infections tend to last three to five days. But odds are this is bacterial and thereby would require antibiotics. But you're right, in general, that antibiotics are overused.
