A member asked:

Aside from the surgical obliteration of the pleural space, are there any measures that can be taken to prevent future recurrences of spontaneous pnuemothorax?

Yes.: Chemical pleurodesis is the obliteration of the pleural space by instillation of a Tetracycline(Doxycycline or Minocycline) or Talc. The recurrence rate with Talc is 5-8 % compared with recurrence rate with Tetracycline of 20-25%. The recurrence rate with VATS is <5%. There is some concern about use of Talc in young healthty patients because of safety reasons and fear of long term health effects.
