A member asked:

How long not being able to have a bowel movement should become worrisome? started with diarrhea..then cramps on and off..nausea...has been a week now

Time to get help...: Normal bowel frequency in america fits a bell-curve distribution--once daily stooling is the middle of the curve, but the normal range extends from 3 bowel movements daily to 1 bowel movement every 3-4 days. Sounds like your stool infrequency is both acute & a change from your norm. Time to get evaluated please.

See answer: Not moving your bowels after having a period of diarrhea is not unusual. Prolonged constipation lasting several weeks can be dangerous, particularly in the elderly, who are subject to fecal impaction. Severe prolonged fecal impaction can lead to perforation of the colon. Chronic constipation can lead to volvulus of the colon(the colon twisting on itself) which can also lead to colonic perforation.
