Stay away from Zika: Zika can destroy a baby's mind. Nobody wants to spend a lifetime caring for a brain-damaged child (and adult). So, until more is known about Zika, avoidance is the key. Zika will come to the mainland U.S. in 2016-2017, likely along the southeastern coast. It is already in Puerto Rico. The virus can cause a variety of symptoms, from none to severe. A man can catch Zika and give it to his wife.

Plan birth control: If you really need to go to any area where Zika has been found, please plan to use great birth control for at least the 9mo before you go through the visit plus 6mo. Zika seems to love eating fetal brain cells but often causes only a minor illness in older children & adults. Get infected once (not pregnant) and you would then be immune & future visits not at risk.
