Gadolinium : is very safe if your kidney function is normal. Kidney damage can be seen in patients with kidney disease who received gadolinium. Patients with severe infection called sepsis also are at risk of kidney injury with gadolinium. Gadolinium can cause severe fibrosis of the body in patients with renal failure. This is called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.

No,: MRI contrast is relatively safe for the kidneys, particularly if you have normall kidney function. It does not have the potential nephrotoxic effects of the iodinated contrast used for CT. The main concern of MRI contrast in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency is Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis(NSF), a rare but devastating complication. There is no risk for NSF with normal kidney fx.
