Not necessarily: In general, you would want to stay off it to try to limit the swelling. Once you get beyond that, there is usually no contraindications to weight bearing as tolerated in a cast. The ligaments involved are not so much involved in weight bearing as they are in stabilizing the ankle and so would be protected in a cast. Discuss your specific case with your doctor.
