Neck Pain and Spasms: Not a good surgery i know of for neck pain and muscle spasms. If your doc suggested surgery before any other treatments, either you have one serious problem, or one all-too-avid-to-operate-doctor. If studies show nothing serious, try mckenzie pt (need a doc's rx), nsaids, ice/heat, salonpas hot patches. Pilates/yoga/piyo great as well, don't need an rx. Get a 2nd opinion.

Soma (carisoprodol): Soma (carisoprodol) is a sedative that is used as a muscle relaxant. It's mechanism of action is really not known but one of it's metabolites as it is broken down in your body is Meprobamate which a controlled substance and may cause dependance. Using the Soma once a day should not cause a problem and this should be discussed with your doctor. Surgery for neck pain alone is controversial.
