Vegetarian BF mom ok: It is fine for a vegetarian mom to breastfeed her infant, but it is extremely important to make sure your diet includes enough iron, protein, and calcium. Also, Vitamin B-12 is found almost exclusively in meat, so a supplement is necessary. Vitamin D is also very important for bone growth. I recommend that you speak with your obstetrician about a good supplement that includes B-12, D, and iron. :)

Notify ped: I consulted on one baby exclusively breast fed by a vegetarian mom after it was hospitalized for severe anemia. Without proper vitamin supplements to make up for the lack of B12 and or other needed material, this can be a problem. As long as your pedi is aware, they can guide you on supplements and test baby periodically to monitor the issue.
