Likely: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, Most laboratories and endocrinologists use 5.0 as the limit, some use even a lower level to diagnose hypothyroidism. It would be prudent to follow your doctor's advice about medication.

It Depends...: It would helpful to know why test was done & Fam Hx? The old nl range was up to 5 IU/ml, but most endocrinologists/labs now use a number around 4. This # is c/w subclinical hypothyroidism, but one value in the this range is not diagnostic as values fluctuate for many reasons. If any susp of thyroid dz the test should be repeated in 4-6 weeks w/a T4 & thyroid ab's. f/u, but do not worry!
