Pregnancy: Take a pregnancy test. Blood sometimes is seen as a brown discharge. Nearly half of all pregnancies bleed in the first trimester. Some women actually mistake this as their menses. If the test is negative, and you still don't start your period, you should see your doctor for further eval. Other possible causes could be infection, hormonal imbalances, fibroids, polyps, and cancer.
