Lymph nodes?: Painful bumps behind the knee could be lymph nodes, which generally appear in response to local inflammation or infection, below that knee for example, like in the shin, calf or foot. If there's no infection or inflammation evident, or if they've been there for more than two weeks, you need to see a local doctor for an evaluation.
