No: Scaling and root planing will not increase pocket depth. The initial 3mm reading could have occurred if the probe hit embedded calculus. Once the pocket was cleaned out, the true reading was obtained.

Perio evaluation: After a cleaning, calculus if present, may be removed to obtain deeper pockets that were there originally, just occluded with calculus. Now is the time to follow through and get the complete periodontal care that is needed.
