Is there any possibility bladder cancer would not show up on a sonogram of the bladder & kidneys?

Yes: Ultrasound will often fail to find cancers of the ureter and/or bladder. Cystoscopy/ureteroscopy by a urologist, with biopsy when required, are the best approach when these cancers are suspected. A urologist provides the best guidance for this workup.
