A member asked:

For what length of time can one expect to live after they start dialysis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Varies a great deal!: Generally, the best results occur with kidney transplant - so aim for that if you can. Transplant is usually superior to dialysis, though daily hemodialysis done at home can run close behind! life span depends in part on the initial cause of kidney failure. Patients with polycystic kidney disease, for example, tend to do better than diabetics. Talk to your nephrologist for answers on you.
