Many causes: There are many reasons why kidneys fail. The most common causes of end stage renal failure are diabetes and high blood pressure. Less common causes may include autoimmune disease, polycystic kidney disease (hereditary), acute toxic injury to the kidney, and on. If your sister's situation is not temporary and she will need ongoing dialysis, you may want to learn about organ donation. Good luck.
