Reason for concern: Barrett's epithelium occurs as a terminal event in those with chronic GERD. with higher risk of cancer of the esophagus, especially when Barrett's is dysplastic & replaces more & more of the esophagus lining. Barrett's warrants surveillance endoscopy, aggressive acid suppression, & maybe ablation &/or surgery. Your GI doc can help educate U, but keep in mind that not all Barrett's turns cancerous.
