That's an OK dose: There is no evidence your doctor is incompetent. Most likely you were being treated for chlamydia and/or gonorrhea. The usual dose for chlamydia is 1 gram (2 500 mg tablets), and 2 g (4 tablets) is sometimes used against gonorrhea. Or maybe they were 250 mg tabs, not 500 mg. Either way, this dose won't hurt you (maybe some stomach upset for a few hours) and should be effective.
