Omphalitis: This occurs among people with very deep navels [persistent urachus] who have hairy skin on the abdomen. The hairs have tiny barbs on the sides which causes them to all line up inside the umbilicus where they slowly penetrate into the skin. So these loose hairs are causing inflamation in there, progressively worse. If you can clean them out, it will heal. This is hard, so surgical excision cures.
