Get religion!: First do the pregnancy test, and if negative get "religious" about the time you take your pills. as the low dose pills tend to lose their effectiveness when taken at irregular intervals greater than 30 hours. The spotting is known as "breakthrough bleeding" for those who don't read the "Bible" of pill use

Birth control pill: I understand your concern. It is possible to have minor bleeding between periods during the first few months if you have recently started using birth control pill. You also may have bleeding if you do not take your pill at a regular time each day. Sometimes the birth control pill you are on is not the right pill for you.
