Side effects rare: Side effects are very rare from valacyclovir. Those listed were reported by people in early research studies, but they occurred no more commonly in people taking the drug compared with those on placebo. In my 40+ years treating herpes patients, I've never seen anyone with a valacyclovir side effect. But if your outbreak is already clearing up, valacyclovir won't help anyway.
