False positive: The initial screening tests that are done in pregnancy are very sensitive, because the aim is to detect any woman that may have an HIV infection. This comes at the cost of false positive tests. If the initial HIV test in pregnancy is positive, it is followed by a more specific test that will then determine if the woman really has been exposed to the HIV.
