STOP antibiotics: ASO is an antibody to strep indicating a prior exposure or infection with strep. ASO titers diagnose autoimmune problems such as rheumatoid arthritis or rheumatic heart disease since untreated strep infection can lead to these. A measured rise in ASO over a few weeks may indicate recent infection that 10 days of an appropriate antibiotic will eradicate. After that they will just make you sick.
