A member asked:

My dad's doctor is always "he doesnt need this test" but my opinion is, my dad is a 56 year old diabetic with hypertension. test him "just to be safe"?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Test for symptoms: It is true that having diabetes does increase the risk of heart disease, particularly in the setting of hypertension. However, current guidelines do not recommend testing for heart disease unless patients are having symptoms. The best thing for your dad is to change his diet habits and not smoke. Diabetes and heart disease are both completely reversible with healthy diet. Check: www.pcrm.org
