Eustachian tube: The ear drum closes a chamber that otherwise has only one opening, that tube goes into the back of the nose. When you go up and down in a plane or elevator the air pressure changes. If the tube is blocked by allergy or inflammation, the change in pressure will "pop" your ear drum. When you swallow, cough or sneeze pressure builds up in your nose popping you ears.
