A member asked:

Hello, my gyno advised that i should start taking folic acid, how many mgs should i take & can it be stand alone or should it be in a multivitamin?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Folic acid: It depends 'what' you are taking the folic acid for... If you're concerned about preventing neural tube defects in an unborn baby, then probably a large dose like 5 mg a day is helpful. Most of my patients are on 1 mg a day. Remember folic acid comes from plants that have FOLiage (leaves) - so anything green with leaves will have the natural vitamin. Check the vitamin bottle to see how much folate
