5+ years: It varies somewhat from one country to others. In North America and most western European countries, plan on a 4 year university degree, then 4 years in medical school, at least 1 year and up to 5 years of additional training as a resident or registrar; and somtimes more specialty training after that (e.g. fellowship). Most doctors start independent practice or employment about age 27-30.
