Why does effexor (venlafaxine) xr that's for anxiety make you more anxious before it (supposedly) eases anxiety?

May not be best 4 u: Effexor (venlafaxine) is an antidepressant. IF it is making you anxious it may not be the best medication for you. Discuss this with your doctor.

Good question: As a class, antidepressants/antianxiety medications such as Effexor (venlafaxine) XR, can potentially cause worsening depression and/or anxiety in susceptible individuals. However, it also may be that the dose of Effexor (venlafaxine) XR is subtherapeutic. That is, it may not be the Effexor (venlafaxine) XR causing the anxiety. Instead, the dose may be insufficient to provide symptomatic relief. Discuss with doctor. Hope this helps.
